SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 2056

Commending Ricky L. Walker.



Agreed to by the Senate, June 22, 2026

WHEREAS, Ricky L. Walker, a distinguished law-enforcement officer with nearly 50 years of experience in public safety, has ably served the Amelia County community as sheriff since 2008; and

WHEREAS, Ricky Walker began his career in law enforcement on December 1, 1978, as a member of the Virginia State Police and was stationed in Sussex County after graduating from the academy the following June; and

WHEREAS, in 1984, Ricky Walker was reassigned to Amelia County, where he served and protected local residents until his retirement from the Virginia State Police as a master trooper in 2007; and

WHEREAS, desirous to be of further service to the community, Ricky Walker ran for and was elected as sheriff of Amelia County, taking office on January 1, 2008; and

WHEREAS, during his tenure as sheriff, Ricky Walker oversaw the growth of the Amelia County Sheriff's Office from 14 sworn officers and nine civilian employees in 2008 to 30 sworn officers and 12 civilian employees in 2026; and

WHEREAS, Ricky Walker established close relationships with county officials, other first responder agencies, and federal law-enforcement organizations and developed memoranda of understanding with surrounding jurisdictions, which led to the efficient resolution of both old and new cases; and

WHEREAS, Ricky Walker built strong relationships based on mutual trust and respect with members of the public and was admired for his transparency and collaborative leadership style, maintaining an open door policy for both officers and local residents; and

WHEREAS, Ricky Walker organized an excellent force of highly trained deputies and dispatchers who serve with honesty, reliability, integrity, and loyalty; he worked closely with church congregations, schools, and civic organizations to share his platform for public safety and the role of police in the community; and

WHEREAS, Ricky Walker worked diligently to ensure that the members of the Amelia County Sheriff's Office had access to the best possible training and equipment; he applied for and received hundreds of thousands of dollars in grants to support these initiatives and save taxpayers money; and

WHEREAS, under Ricky Walker's leadership, the Amelia County Sheriff's Office created a wide range of new programs to enhance engagement with the public, training for officers, safety in schools, traffic safety, and drug enforcement, as well as addressing other vital issues in the community; and

WHEREAS, Ricky Walker managed the Amelia County Sheriff's Office professionally, proficiently, and without favoritism or prejudice; the office is well poised to meet the challenges of the future thanks to his vision and dedication; and

WHEREAS, after nearly two decades of leadership of the Amelia County Sheriff's Office, Ricky Walker will complete his tenure as sheriff on January 1, 2027; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate of Virginia, That Ricky L. Walker hereby be commended for his legacy of service and leadership as sheriff of Amelia County; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Ricky L. Walker as an expression of the Senate of Virginia's admiration for his achievements as a law-enforcement officer and contributions to public safety in the Commonwealth.
