SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 2079

Commending Remington Baptist Church.



Agreed to by the Senate, June 29, 2026

WHEREAS, for 150 years, Remington Baptist Church has grown with and served the Remington community, providing opportunities for worship, spiritual guidance, and generous outreach programs designed to enhance the lives of local residents; and

WHEREAS, situated near the Rappahannock River in southern Fauquier County, Remington Baptist Church traces its roots to 1874, when local residents of what was then known as Rappahannock Station met to discuss organizing a new church; and

WHEREAS, originally known as the Regular Baptist Church of Rappahannock Station, Remington Baptist Church was officially founded on February 13, 1876, with nine members; Dr. John Burroughs and Sanford D. Embrey were selected as the first deacons of the church, which was served by traveling ministers in its early years; and

WHEREAS, by the early 1880s, the Regular Baptist Church of Rappahannock Station was meeting in a local school house and had formed a building committee to plan a permanent house of worship; construction began in 1883, with more than 75,000 bricks molded on site by John Dewey, and the new building was fully operational by 1889; and

WHEREAS, the Town of Remington was incorporated in 1890, and the Regular Baptist Church of Rappahannock Station changed its name to Remington Baptist Church in 1898 to reflect the growth of the community; and

WHEREAS, after enduring the Great Depression and World War II, Remington Baptist Church was guided into the modern era by the Reverend John Houghton, who laid the groundwork for a significant expansion of the church, and the Reverend Gareth Miller, who began holding services every Sunday as the church's first full-time pastor; and

WHEREAS, in the early 1960s, with the population of the Town of Remington at only 288, Remington Baptist Church counted 309 members of the congregation, demonstrating the church's vital role in community life both in the town and in the surrounding region; and

WHEREAS, Remington Baptist Church has long emphasized the importance of youth engagement, beginning with the establishment of its Sunday school program in 1882; the church has since developed programs and ministries for young people of all ages, as well as a vacation bible school program; and

WHEREAS, over more recent years, Remington Baptist Church has continued to help local residents grow in faith and has enhanced local life through outreach programs that provide food, clothing, financial assistance, and other services to people in need; the church also participates in local events, such as the Remington Fall Festival; and

WHEREAS, members of the Remington Baptist Church congregation have supported mission work in the Commonwealth, across the United States, and around the world, strengthening other communities while spreading the news of the Gospel; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate of Virginia, That Remington Baptist Church, a beacon of faith, hope, and fellowship for the Remington community, hereby be commended on the occasion of its 150th anniversary in 2026; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Remington Baptist Church as an expression of the Senate of Virginia's admiration for the church's long history and legacy of contributions to the residents of Remington.
