HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 2114

Celebrating the life of Alice Pearl Gatling Morings.



Agreed to by the House of Delegates, June 22, 2026

WHEREAS, Alice Pearl Gatling Morings, a beloved member of the Suffolk community, died on November 24, 2025; and

WHEREAS, Alice Morings grew up in the former Nansemond County and attended Nansemond County Training School, which was originally constructed as the first public high school for Black students in the area; and

WHEREAS, Alice Morings subsequently earned a teacher's aide certificate and a nurse's aide certificate from Paul D. Camp Community College in Franklin; and

WHEREAS, Alice Morings was a devout member of St. Matthews Holiness Church in Suffolk for many years, serving as treasurer and volunteering to support the church in a variety of capacities, such as cooking meals in the church kitchen or cleaning; and

WHEREAS, after St. Matthews Holiness Church closed, Alice Morings continued to express her faith as a member of Holland Mission United Church of Christ; and

WHEREAS, predeceased by two daughters and two sons, Alice Morings will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by her children, Mary, Frederick, Samuel, and Lyndon, and their families, and numerous other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That the House of Delegates hereby note with great sadness the loss of Alice Pearl Gatling Morings, a faithful volunteer leader in Suffolk; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Alice Pearl Gatling Morings as an expression of the House of Delegates' respect for her memory.
