Celebrating the life of Charlie Reed Hill.

WHEREAS, Charlie Reed Hill, a beloved member of the South Boston community who made history as the first Black law-enforcement officer in Halifax County, died on May 21, 2026; and

WHEREAS, Charlie Hill graduated from the former Halifax Training School in 1946 before earning a degree in elementary education from what is today the Virginia University of Lynchburg; he also attended the former Saint Paul's College and what is today Virginia State University; and

WHEREAS, Charlie Hill served his country with honor and distinction as a member of the United States Army from 1952 to 1954 and taught in New York for a year before later returning to the Commonwealth; and

WHEREAS, Charlie Hill began his career in law enforcement in 1964 as the only Black officer in the South Boston Police Department and overcame discrimination and other challenges to serve as a patrol officer for more than two decades before retiring in 1989; and

WHEREAS, Charlie Hill worked tirelessly throughout his law-enforcement career to safeguard and protect the residents of South Boston and to help and uplift people in need; and

WHEREAS, Charlie Hill will be fondly remembered and dearly missed by his loving wife of 71 years, Shirley; his children, Broderick, Michael, Norman, Jirgetha, and Wilheminia, and their families; and numerous other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That the Senate of Virginia hereby note with great sadness the loss of Charlie Reed Hill, a pioneering law-enforcement officer and treasured member of the South Boston community whose service and dedication will forever inspire all who knew him; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Charlie Reed Hill as an expression of the Senate of Virginia's respect for his memory.
