Commending the Northern Virginia Bengali Association.

WHEREAS, the Northern Virginia Bengali Association, a 501(c)(3) charitable, nonprofit organization in Chantilly, has strived to represent the Bengali community and promote Bengali culture in the metropolitan Washington, D.C., area for more than 30 years; and

WHEREAS, established in 1989, the Northern Virginia Bengali Association comprises members from Loudoun, Fairfax, and Prince William counties, as well as neighboring counties, parts of Maryland, and Washington, D.C.; and

WHEREAS, the Northern Virginia Bengali Association ably represents the interests of the Bengali-speaking population in the area and works to preserve and promote cultural, social, and religious traditions and native language; and

WHEREAS, uniting people of all faiths and backgrounds, the Cares wing of the Northern Virginia Bengali Association supports the community by hosting charitable and community service events throughout the year that include collecting food for the community in partnership with Food for Others, serving homemade breakfast for firefighters and law-enforcement officers, participating in charity runs and Earth Day events, and feeding people in homeless shelters; and

WHEREAS, the Northern Virginia Bengali Association hosts a weekend-long cultural and religious festival called Durgotsav, or Durga Puja, a traditional event that celebrates the triumph of good over evil, which draws hundreds of people from different backgrounds, including local community leaders; and

WHEREAS, recognizing the importance of educational and informational events, the Talks group of the Northern Virginia Bengali Association organizes speaking events on topics of interest to the community; and

WHEREAS, by supporting the Bengali Indian diaspora, the Northern Virginia Bengali Association plays an integral role in the Northern Virginia community, while making valuable contributions to numerous professions, organizations, fine arts institutions, local community affairs, charity initiatives, and welfare endeavors; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate of Virginia, That the Northern Virginia Bengali Association hereby be commended for its achievements in pursuit of its mission; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the Northern Virginia Bengali Association as an expression of the Senate of Virginia's admiration for the organization's legacy of service.
