Commending Barcroft Elementary School.

WHEREAS, Barcroft Elementary School in Arlington County celebrated its 100th anniversary on September 21, 2025, marking a century of dedication to public education and community service; and

WHEREAS, Barcroft Elementary School was established in 1906 with one teacher and 10 students meeting in a local living room, later expanding to a one-room schoolhouse at 800 South Buchanan Street in 1908; and

WHEREAS, on September 21, 1925, the Barcroft School and Civic League successfully opened the current Barcroft Elementary School building, welcoming 65 students and establishing what would become the oldest continuously located elementary school in Arlington County; and

WHEREAS, for 100 years, Barcroft Elementary School has served generations of students and families, fostering academic excellence, civic responsibility, and a strong sense of community; and

WHEREAS, the Barcroft Elementary School community commemorated this historic milestone with a celebration that honored both its past and its future, including a human chain tracing the distance between the original schoolhouse and the current building, a special assembly, historical displays, antique cars, traditional games and activities, a community picnic, and the creation of a new time capsule to be opened in 25 years; and

WHEREAS, the centennial celebration also featured the participation of the Wakefield High School drum line and flag team and the Arlington Historical Society, reflecting the deep ties between Barcroft Elementary School and the broader Arlington community; and

WHEREAS, the students, families, educators, and staff of Barcroft Elementary School have demonstrated a lasting commitment to educational excellence, tradition, and community engagement over the past century, staying true to their motto, “Work Hard. Get Smart. Have Fun. Be Kind.”; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That Barcroft Elementary School hereby be commended on the occasion of its 100th anniversary; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Barcroft Elementary School as an expression of the House of Delegates' admiration for the school's century of service to the Commonwealth and best wishes for continued success in the years to come.
