HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 179
Commending the Shepherd's Center of Northern Virginia.
Agreed to by the House of Delegates, March 2, 2026
WHEREAS, the Shepherd's Center of Northern Virginia, a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping older adults maintain their independence and age with dignity, has greatly served the Northern Virginia community for many years; and
WHEREAS, the Shepherd's Center of Northern Virginia began as the Shepherd's Center of Oakton-Vienna in 1997, evolved by expanding its service area over the years, and ultimately assumed its current name in February 2021 after merging with the Shepherd's Center of Great Falls; and
WHEREAS, the Shepherd's Center of Northern Virginia provides a variety of supportive services and programs with the assistance of its hardworking volunteers, who use the knowledge and skills acquired over their lifetimes to lend a helping hand to their peers; and
WHEREAS, the Shepherd's Center of Northern Virginia offers free transportation services to any older adult in its service areas, enabling its clients to attend their medical and rehabilitation appointments and to go shopping as needed; and
WHEREAS, the Shepherd's Center of Northern Virginia organizes a number of social, educational, health, and enrichment programs to build connections between older adults in the community and to enhance their quality of life; and
WHEREAS, the Shepherd's Center of Northern Virginia currently serves more than 3,000 senior citizens, with its volunteers contributing more than 8,000 hours of service and driving more than 12,000 miles in 2023 alone; and
WHEREAS, in recognition of its accomplishments, the Shepherd's Center of Northern Virginia was admitted into the Catalogue for Philanthropy, which identified the organization as one of the best critical local nonprofits in the Greater Washington area; and
WHEREAS, by empowering older adults to live independently with purpose and dignity and by providing volunteers with meaningful ways to serve, the Shepherd's Center of Northern Virginia has helped to make Northern Virginia a wonderful place to live, work, and retire; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That the Shepherd's Center of Northern Virginia hereby be commended for its legacy of service to older adults in Northern Virginia; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the Shepherd's Center of Northern Virginia as an expression of the House of Delegates' admiration for the organization's contributions to Northern Virginia and the Commonwealth.
