HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 47
Commending the New River Valley Agency on Aging.
Agreed to by the House of Delegates, February 2, 2026
WHEREAS, the New River Valley Agency on Aging, an Area Agency on Aging headquartered in Pulaski with a mission to support and enhance the lives of older adults, their families, and caregivers through advocacy, information, and services, celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2025; and
WHEREAS, the Area Agency on Aging program traces its origins to President Lyndon B. Johnson's declaration of a war on poverty and the landmark Economic Opportunity Act of 1964; and
WHEREAS, the New River Valley Agency on Aging was formed in 1975 to promote the independence of older adults living in the counties of Floyd, Giles, Montgomery, and Pulaski, the City of Radford, and the towns of Blacksburg, Christiansburg, and Pulaski; and
WHEREAS, the jurisdictions that comprise the New River Valley Agency on Aging contribute financial support and appoint board members who provide strong leadership to facilitate the agency's excellent work; and
WHEREAS, the New River Valley Agency on Aging is a proud member of the Virginia Association of Area Agencies on Aging, which was established in 1976 to improve the Commonwealth's ability to serve its elderly population; and
WHEREAS, the New River Valley Agency on Aging receives guidance from a regional, volunteer advisory council to offer a host of programs, including information and referral services, options counseling, congregate and home-delivered meals, homemaker services, medical transportation, disease prevention, public information and education, legal assistance, family caregiver supports, elder abuse prevention, and insurance counseling; and
WHEREAS, the New River Valley Agency on Aging is a trusted partner working with multiple regional networks and coalitions, including a long-term care coordinating council, Aging in Community Network, the New River Valley Partnership for Access to Healthcare, the Supplies for Seniors project, the THRIVE Network, the Virginia Tech Center for Gerontology, and the New River Community College Human Services Advisory Committee; and
WHEREAS, the New River Valley Agency on Aging continually strives to enhance lives in its service area through innovative and compassionate solutions; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That the New River Valley Agency on Aging, an Area Agency on Aging serving the Fourth Planning District of Virginia, hereby be commended on the occasion of its 50th anniversary; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the New River Valley Agency on Aging as an expression of the House of Delegates' admiration for the organization's mission and its contributions to the Commonwealth.
