HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 307
Commending the Herndon Swim Club.

WHEREAS, for 70 years, the Herndon Swim Club has offered the Herndon community a safe and enjoyable place for families to relax and enjoy the summer; and
WHEREAS, the Herndon Swim Club was the vision of the Herndon Lion's Club, which held movie nights, auction sales, and other events to raise funds for the pool; and
WHEREAS, the Herndon Swim Club was aided in its infancy by the Detwiler family, who sold the land that was used for the pool at a low price to support the endeavor; and
WHEREAS, the Herndon Swim Club officially opened on July 8, 1956, at which point the club had already sold more than 200 memberships, a remarkable feat considering there were only about 1,500 people living in Herndon at that time; and
WHEREAS, over the years, the Herndon Swim Club has continually updated and upgraded its facilities to accommodate its growth and enhance its ability to serve the community; and
WHEREAS, the Herndon Swim Club is the home of the Herndon Hammerheads swim program, which has instilled in thousands of children a love for swimming and community spirit; and
WHEREAS, the Herndon Swim Club has been the favorite summer destination for generations of families, and it is an important reason why Herndon is a wonderful place to live, work, and raise a family; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend the Herndon Swim Club on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the pool's opening; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the Herndon Swim Club as an expression of the General Assembly's admiration for the club's contributions to Herndon and the Commonwealth.
