HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 221
Celebrating the life of Elizabeth Flannagan Edwards.

WHEREAS, Elizabeth Flannagan Edwards, an esteemed attorney, devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, and beloved member of the Richmond community, died on June 10, 2025; and
WHEREAS, Elizabeth Edwards earned a bachelor's degree in 1978 from the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University before obtaining her juris doctor degree from the University of Richmond School of Law five years later; and
WHEREAS, Elizabeth Edwards was admitted to the Virginia State Bar in 1983 and spent the entirety of her distinguished legal career at the firm McGuireWoods, where she worked tirelessly to support her clients and colleagues up to her retirement in 2021; and
WHEREAS, Elizabeth Edwards was an enthusiastic supporter of the University of Richmond's football and basketball teams and the Richmond Kickers soccer team and could often be found at City Stadium in Richmond on summer evenings making cherished memories with family and friends; and
WHEREAS, Elizabeth Edwards fostered the growth and development of young people in Richmond by starting endowments at Riverside School and Trinity Episcopal School; and
WHEREAS, guided throughout her life by her faith, Elizabeth Edwards enjoyed worship and fellowship with her community at St. Michael's Episcopal Church in Richmond, where she participated in mission trips, served as a lay Eucharistic minister, and volunteered in the food pantry; and
WHEREAS, preceded in death by her husband of 45 years, Stephen, Elizabeth Edwards will be fondly remembered and dearly missed by her children, Anne, Sam, and Cody, and their families and by numerous other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of Elizabeth Flannagan Edwards, a treasured member of the Richmond community whose kindness, wisdom, and generosity touched countless lives; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Elizabeth Flannagan Edwards as an expression of the General Assembly's respect for her memory.
