HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 217

Celebrating the life of Anna Lou Aaroe Schaberg.

WHEREAS, Anna Lou Aaroe Schaberg, a passionate educator and devoted philanthropist who touched countless lives throughout the Richmond area, died on July 31, 2025; and

WHEREAS, Anna Schaberg was born in Charlottesville and grew up in the West End neighborhood of Richmond; she attended what is now Randolph College, then earned bachelor's and master's degrees from Virginia Commonwealth University; and

WHEREAS, Anna Schaberg pursued a career as an educator with Richmond Public Schools and began working as a coordinator of programs for gifted students in 1977; she hired a talented team of teachers and created the Special Program for Academic and Creative Excellence; and

WHEREAS, over the years, Anna Schaberg also planned summer programs, special events, and staff development and co-chaired the planning group for the Maggie L. Walker Governor's School; and

WHEREAS, Anna Schaberg was a graduate of Leadership Metro Richmond and served as co-chair of Visions 2020 for the Richmond First Club; in 1990, she and her husband formed the Bob and Anna Lou Schaberg Foundation to support organizations that help the entire Richmond community thrive; and

WHEREAS, after her retirement from teaching in 2000, Anna Schaberg established the Bob and Anna Lou Schaberg Foundation's grants and gifts program and met with nonprofit leaders to develop a comprehensive picture of community services; the foundation is currently engaged with more than 95 nonprofit organizations in the Richmond area, creating systems of support for affordable housing, workforce development, education, and more; and

WHEREAS, Anna Schaberg will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by her husband, Bob; her son, Andrew, and his family; and numerous other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of Anna Lou Aaroe Schaberg; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Anna Lou Aaroe Schaberg as an expression of the General Assembly's respect for her memory.
