SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 109

Celebrating the life of Nicholas Phillip Picerno.

Agreed to by the Senate, March 10, 2026

WHEREAS, Nicholas Phillip Picerno, a leader in law enforcement, respected historian, and distinguished resident of the Commonwealth, died on October 8, 2025; and

WHEREAS, Nicholas “Nick” Picerno dedicated nearly four decades to law enforcement, rising through the ranks to become the inaugural chief of the Bridgewater College Campus Police Department, a position in which he served with distinction until his retirement in 2016; and

WHEREAS, beyond his professional service in law enforcement, Nick Picerno earned national recognition as a leading Civil War historian and passionate battlefield preservationist, who was widely regarded as the foremost authority on the 10th Maine Infantry Regiment and the 29th Maine Infantry Regiment; and

WHEREAS, Nick Picerno's commitment to public education and historic preservation was demonstrated through his longstanding service to the Shenandoah Valley Battlefields Foundation, where he became the longest serving board member in the organization's history and was honored as chair emeritus; and

WHEREAS, Nick Picerno is remembered not only for his professional achievements and scholarly contributions, but also for his fierce loyalty to friends, and unwavering devotion to his family and community; and

WHEREAS, Nick Picerno is survived by his beloved wife, Kathy, of New Market; his son, Nicholas, of North Potomac, Maryland; and many friends, colleagues, and admirers whose lives were enriched by his presence; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That the Senate of Virginia hereby note with great sadness the loss of Nicholas Phillip Picerno, a public servant of uncommon dedication, whose legacy of leadership, scholarship, and service will endure for generations; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Nicholas Phillip Picerno as an expression of the Senate of Virginia's respect for his memory.
