Commending the Boulevard Bridge.

WHEREAS, the Boulevard Bridge, colloquially known as the “Nickel Bridge” for its mid-20th century five-cent toll, has been a vital link connecting the Richmond community across the James River for 100 years; and
WHEREAS, completed in 1925, the Boulevard Bridge was originally constructed by the Boulevard Bridge Corporation to support the development of the Westover Hills neighborhood and has since become a major artery for daily commuters, pedestrians, and cyclists alike; and
WHEREAS, spanning approximately 2,030 feet, the Boulevard Bridge is a distinctive deck truss structure that has undergone thoughtful renovations, including a major restoration in the 1990s, ensuring its continued safety, functionality, and aesthetic charm; and
WHEREAS, the Richmond Metropolitan Transportation Authority has maintained stewardship of the Boulevard Bridge since acquiring it in 1969, preserving its legacy while adapting to the evolving needs of the community; and
WHEREAS, the Boulevard Bridge is more than a piece of infrastructure; it is a beloved landmark that reflects Richmond's history, character, and enduring spirit, offering scenic views of the James River and serving as a daily reminder of the city's interconnectedness; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend the Boulevard Bridge and its century of service to the Richmond community on the occasion of its 100th anniversary; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare copies of this resolution, commending the Boulevard Bridge, for presentation to the Richmond Metropolitan Transportation Authority and the citizens and City of Richmond as an expression of the General Assembly's admiration and appreciation for this historic structure.
