Commending John W. Haun, Ed.D.

WHEREAS, John W. Haun, Ed.D., an esteemed education administrator who most recently served the Commonwealth as the executive director of the Virginia High School League, retired on July 1, 2025; and
WHEREAS, John W. “Billy” Haun, Ed.D., embarked upon his career in education after earning a bachelor's degree in elementary education from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in 1980; and
WHEREAS, after serving for several years as a teacher and coach and obtaining a master's degree in education, administration, and supervision at Shenandoah University in 1997, Billy Haun joined Albemarle County Public Schools (ACPS) as a building level administrator for middle and high school; and
WHEREAS, Billy Haun was subsequently promoted to assistant superintendent for student learning of ACPS in 2009, completed his doctor of education degree in educational administration and supervision at the University of Virginia in 2011, and was named chief academic officer and assistant superintendent for instruction of the Virginia Department of Education in 2014, which gave him the opportunity to work with schools across the Commonwealth; and
WHEREAS, on July 1, 2016, Billy Haun was named executive director of the Virginia High School League, assuming the leadership of the sanctioning organization that oversees interscholastic athletic competition between the Commonwealth's public schools; and
WHEREAS, as executive director of the VHSL, Billy Haun worked closely with superintendents, athletic directors, and principals across the Commonwealth to ensure exceptional athletic and academic experiences for the more than 170,000 students participating annually in VHSL sports and activities; and
WHEREAS, Billy Haun gracefully navigated the VHSL and its member schools through a number of challenges during his tenure, including the unprecedented health crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, achieving a new level of transparency between member schools and the public; and
WHEREAS, throughout his career, Billy Haun demonstrated an unwavering commitment to the success and well-being of the students and families he served, leaving a legacy that will inspire others for years to come; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That John W. Haun, Ed.D., hereby be commended on the occasion of his retirement for his 45 years of service as a teacher, coach, and administrator; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to John W. Haun, Ed.D., as an expression of the House of Delegates' admiration for his contributions to the Commonwealth and best wishes for a joyful and fulfilling retirement.
