HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 270

Commending the Norfolk State University Alumni Association Portsmouth Chapter.

WHEREAS, for 50 years, the Norfolk State University Alumni Association Portsmouth Chapter has greatly served the Portsmouth community by fostering educational opportunities for local youth who aspire to study at Norfolk State University; and

WHEREAS, the Norfolk State University Alumni Association (NSUAA) Portsmouth Chapter was chartered in 1976 with 26 members and Lawrence Reid serving as its first president; it was the eighth NSUAA chapter to be chartered at the time of its founding; and

WHEREAS, the primary mission of the NSUAA Portsmouth Chapter is to raise funds to support scholarships for students in Portsmouth who wish to attend Norfolk State University; and

WHEREAS, the NSUAA Portsmouth Chapter has awarded tens of thousands of dollars in scholarships over the years while also generously supporting the fundraisers of other NSUAA chapters in the Commonwealth and Washington, D.C.; and

WHEREAS, in 1997, the NSUAA Portsmouth Chapter became the first NSUAA chapter to establish an alumni gospel choir, which remains a key component of the chapter's community outreach efforts to this day; and

WHEREAS, the NSUAA Portsmouth Chapter cultivates community through its beloved annual events and its hospitality at various Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association and Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference sporting events; and

WHEREAS, the golden anniversary of the NSUAA Portsmouth Chapter provides an opportunity for members and the community to reflect upon the profound and lasting impact the organization has made on countless lives; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend the Norfolk State University Alumni Association Portsmouth Chapter on the occasion of its 50th anniversary; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the Norfolk State University Alumni Association Portsmouth Chapter as an expression of the General Assembly's admiration for its contributions to Portsmouth and the Commonwealth.
