Celebrating the life of Jack Holland Spain, Jr.

WHEREAS, Jack Holland Spain, Jr., an esteemed attorney who made numerous contributions to the Richmond community through his commitment to servant leadership, died on November 12, 2025; and

WHEREAS, Jack Spain was born in North Carolina and graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill before earning his law degree from Harvard University; and

WHEREAS, Jack Spain pursued a career as an attorney and settled in Richmond, where he was a partner at the firm then known as Hunton & Williams; he served as special counsel to the Virginia Commission on Constitutional Revision and chair of the state and local government law committees at the American Bar Association and the Virginia Bar Association; and

WHEREAS, in recognition of his achievements in the legal profession, Jack Spain was elected as a fellow of the American College of Bond Counsel; and

WHEREAS, Jack Spain was an avid traveler who loved treating a new destination as an opportunity to learn about its past; he was especially passionate about the histories of North Carolina and Virginia and supported many historic preservation efforts; and

WHEREAS, Jack Spain served on the board of the Maymont Foundation and helped establish Maymont Park around the historic Maymont Mansion in Richmond; he also served on the board of the King and Queen County Historical Society and played an instrumental role in the opening of the King and Queen Courthouse Tavern Museum; and

WHEREAS, Jack Spain enjoyed fellowship and worship with the congregation of Second Presbyterian Church, where he served as a trustee and an usher; and

WHEREAS, predeceased by one son, Sidney, Jack Spain will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by his wife of 61 years, Mary; his son, John, and his family; and numerous other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of Jack Holland Spain, Jr., a respected attorney who touched countless lives through his legacy of civic engagement in Richmond; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Jack Holland Spain, Jr., as an expression of the General Assembly's respect for his memory.
