Commending the Zeta Upsilon Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.

WHEREAS, for 50 years, the Zeta Upsilon Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., has greatly served the Fairfax County and Loudoun County communities through a variety of programs and initiatives; and
WHEREAS, in 1906, a group of visionary men united by the values of scholarship, service, and brotherhood formed Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., the nation's oldest intercollegiate historically African American Greek-letter fraternity; and
WHEREAS, on December 12, 1975, the Zeta Upsilon Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha was founded by its charter members to serve the communities of Fairfax County and Loudoun County; and
WHEREAS, the Zeta Upsilon Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha has promoted scholarship, mentorship, and community welfare through an array of endeavors, including leadership workshops, educational trips, and volunteer work with local shelters, the Special Olympics, and the Adopt-a-Highway program; and
WHEREAS, the Zeta Upsilon Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha has advanced the national organization's mission by supporting a number of its programs, including A Voteless People is a Hopeless People and My Brother's Keeper; and
WHEREAS, the Zeta Upsilon Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha established the Joyce-Gillespie-Harrington Educational and Charitable Foundation to manage its Jewel Scholars Scholarship Program, which has provided financial assistance to college students for several decades; and
WHEREAS, the Zeta Upsilon Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha has received numerous accolades in honor of its service, including recognition from the March of Dimes and the African American Community Alliance; and
WHEREAS, guided by the organization's emphasis on empowerment through education, leadership development, and civic advocacy, the members of the Zeta Upsilon Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha have made a positive and lasting impact in Fairfax County, Loudoun County, and beyond; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend the Zeta Upsilon Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., on the occasion of its 50th anniversary; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the Zeta Upsilon Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., as an expression of the General Assembly's admiration for the chapter's contributions to Fairfax County, Loudoun County, and the Commonwealth.
