Celebrating the life of Alan Stein.

WHEREAS, Alan Stein, a local icon in Virginia Beach who served delicious meals to generations of community members as the founder of the Famous Uncle Al's Hot Dogs and Fries restaurant group, died on January 11, 2025; and

WHEREAS, Alan “Al” Stein grew up in New York, where he worked at his family's delicatessen in his youth; while living in New York, he was also a professional bowler, managed a bowling alley, and owned a sporting goods store; and

WHEREAS, Al Stein served his country as a member of the United States Army, then moved his family to Virginia Beach in 1974; he worked as a site superintendent for home construction and made a name for himself as a talented amateur athlete, playing men's slow-pitch softball and racquet ball; and

WHEREAS, Al Stein ultimately pursued a career in the restaurant business, first opening a delicatessen in Pembroke Mall, followed by Al's Fast Foods on Atlantic Avenue; and

WHEREAS, Al Stein opened the first Famous Uncle Al's Hot Dogs and Fries on Shore Drive in 1985, bringing the Boar's Head brand of New York-style hot dogs to the Hampton Roads Region; and

WHEREAS, known for his easy smile and skill as a conversationalist, Al Stein served generations of the same families and expanded Famous Uncle Al's Hot Dogs and Fries to locations throughout the region, many of which are still in operation; and

WHEREAS, Al Stein will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by his children and their families and numerous other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That the House of Delegates hereby note with great sadness the loss of Alan Stein, a highly admired restaurateur in Virginia Beach; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Alan Stein as an expression of the House of Delegates' respect for his memory.
