SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 104

Commending Woodley Hills Elementary School.

WHEREAS, Woodley Hills Elementary School, an outstanding public primary school in Fairfax County, celebrates its 75th anniversary of service to young people in 2027; and

WHEREAS, Woodley Hills Elementary School, named for the nearby Woodley Hills community and constructed on land that was originally part of George Washington's Mount Vernon, was established during the fall semester of 1952; the school held its first few weeks of classes at Woodlawn Elementary School while the building was still under construction; and

WHEREAS, Woodley Hills Elementary School officially opened during the week of Thanksgiving on November 24, 1952, with a truckload of desks and books arriving just before the first buses of students reached the school; the school's inaugural principal, Charles R. Hughes provided important leadership while also teaching a class of fifth-grade and sixth-grade students; and

WHEREAS, Woodley Hills Elementary School opened with six classrooms and one multi-purpose room, which was used for physical education, art, and music programs; the school added six additional classrooms in 1955, followed by eight more in 1957, to keep up with the growing enrollment; and

WHEREAS, after Fairfax County Public Schools opened its first intermediate schools in 1960, seventh-grade students at Woodley Hills Elementary School began attending Walt Whitman Intermediate School; and

WHEREAS, Woodley Hills Elementary School experienced another influx of students when Fairfax County Public Schools closed all segregated schools at the end of the 1965–1966 academic year, marking the beginning of the school's ethnically and culturally diverse student body; and

WHEREAS, today, Woodley Hills Elementary School serves more than 500 students in pre-kindergarten through sixth grade, with more than half of its students coming from Hispanic backgrounds; and

WHEREAS, as a Positive Behavior Interventions and Support school, Woodley Hills Elementary School ensures a positive learning environment for all students by encouraging development of moral character through positive reinforcement and recognition; and

WHEREAS, the faculty and staff of Woodley Hills Elementary School work diligently to give children the tools and support they need to become critical, creative innovators and thinkers, promoting student success through rigorous, meaningful, and relevant learning experiences; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Woodley Hills Elementary School on the occasion of its 75th anniversary in 2027; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Woodley Hills Elementary School as an expression of the General Assembly's admiration for the school's longstanding contributions to young people in Fairfax County.
