Commending the Reverend Dr. Charles W. Wormley, Sr.

WHEREAS, the Reverend Dr. Charles W. Wormley, Sr., senior pastor of Mount Zion Baptist Church in Spotsylvania County, has greatly served the Greater Fredericksburg community for many years; and

WHEREAS, born and raised in Spotsylvania County, Charles Wormley graduated from the former Walker–Grant High School in 1965 before making history as the first African American to be hired by the City of Fredericksburg; and

WHEREAS, over his 36 years of distinguished service with the City of Fredericksburg, Charles Wormley continually honed his professional talents by studying traffic engineering and electronics at Germanna Community College, the University of Maryland, and Virginia Commonwealth University, and he rose to the position of superintendent of the Traffic Engineering Department by the time of his retirement in 1999; and

WHEREAS, Charles Wormley's journey as a faith leader included pastoring at Chestnut Grove Baptist Church in Madison County for more than 15 years and studying at what is today Cornerstone College and Seminary, where he achieved a master's degree in religious education in 2009; and

WHEREAS, Charles Wormley was licensed and ordained in the Gospel Ministry in 1978 and 1980, respectively, at Mount Zion Baptist Church, and he has been the church's senior pastor for the past 29 years; and

WHEREAS, Charles Wormley has served in other leadership capacities beyond the walls of Mount Zion Baptist Church, including as president of the Spotsylvania Sunday School Union, clerk and moderator of the Wayland Blue Ridge Baptist Association (WBRBA), moderator of the Ministers' and Deacons' Union of the WBRBA, and first vice moderator and moderator of the Mattaponi Baptist Association of Virginia; and

WHEREAS, in recognition of his exemplary faith leadership, Charles Wormley was presented an honorary doctor of religion degree by his alma mater, Cornerstone College and Seminary, in 2015; and

WHEREAS, with great integrity, compassion, and dedication to the individuals and families he serves, Charles Wormley has made a profound and lasting impact on countless lives; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That the Reverend Dr. Charles W. Wormley, Sr., hereby be commended for his legacy of service; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the Reverend Dr. Charles W. Wormley, Sr., as an expression of the House of Delegates' admiration for his contributions to the Commonwealth.
