Commending Kristy N. Somerville-Midgette, Ed.D.

WHEREAS, Kristy N. Somerville-Midgette, Ed.D., a distinguished educator and education administrator currently serving as superintendent of Lynchburg City Public Schools, has greatly served school divisions and students throughout the Commonwealth over her illustrious, 25-year career; and

WHEREAS, Kristy Somerville-Midgette earned a bachelor's degree in special education and psychology from what is today the University of Lynchburg before embarking on her career as a special education teacher with Norfolk City Public Schools; and

WHEREAS, after working several years as a special education teacher with Norfolk City Public Schools, Lynchburg City Public Schools, and Hanover County Public Schools and obtaining a master's degree in special education from the University of Lynchburg, Kristy Somerville-Midgette ventured into education administration as an assistant principal at Cumberland High School; and

WHEREAS, Kristy Somerville-Midgette received her doctor of education degree from Liberty University in 2014 and held several administrative positions, including assistant superintendent, with Mecklenburg County Public Schools between 2010 and 2018 before she was named superintendent of Brunswick County Public Schools; and

WHEREAS, under Kristy Somerville-Midgette's leadership, Brunswick County Public Schools notably achieved the highest rate of growth for students in grades third through eighth across the Commonwealth in the 2023–2024 academic year; and

WHEREAS, in 2025, Kristy Somerville-Midgette was named superintendent of Lynchburg City Public Schools, where she continues to make an impact to benefit the students, families, and communities she serves; and

WHEREAS, in recognition of her leadership and experience, Kristy Somerville-Midgette was elected to serve as the president of the Virginia Association of School Superintendents from 2023 to 2024; she has also received numerous accolades, including the J. Edward Petty Outstanding Graduate Alumni Award from the University of Lynchburg in 2023, and previously served as a member of the Clarksville Town Council; and

WHEREAS, with an unwavering commitment to the success and well-being of her students, Kristy Somerville-Midgette has embodied the ideals of the education profession, earning the esteem and admiration of all Virginians; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That Kristy N. Somerville-Midgette, Ed.D., hereby be commended for her legacy of service with schools in Lynchburg, Brunswick County, Mecklenburg County, Cumberland County, Hanover County, and Norfolk; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Kristy N. Somerville-Midgette, Ed.D., as an expression of the House of Delegates' high regard for her contributions to the education of young people throughout the Commonwealth.
