Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Virginia:

1. That the Code of Virginia is amended by adding a section numbered 33.2-244.1 as follows:

§ 33.2-244.1. Removal of snow and ice from school access corridors; Planning District 8.

A. As used in this section, "school access corridor" means a sidewalk, crosswalk, or portion thereof that is (i) maintained by the Department, (ii) on or adjacent to a primary or secondary highway, (iii) located within a half mile of a school, and (iv) widely used by students to walk to or from such school, as determined by the Department.

B. When providing snow and ice removal services in Planning District 8, the Commissioner of Highways shall prioritize the removal of snow and ice from all school access corridors.

C. The provisions of this section shall not apply if a resident, landowner, or other entity is responsible for removing such snow or ice from such school access corridor pursuant to other law or local ordinance.

D. The Department shall coordinate with the safe routes to school program coordinator, as established pursuant to 23 U.S.C. § 208, in carrying out the provisions of this section.
