HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 879

Celebrating the life of Henry P. Henson.



Agreed to by the House of Delegates, February 21, 2025

WHEREAS, Henry P. Henson, a distinguished law-enforcement officer and an active leader in the Norfolk community, died on June 29, 2024; and

WHEREAS, Henry Henson served the nation during the Korean War as a Morse code specialist with the United States Army; and

WHEREAS, in 1954, Henry Henson joined the Norfolk Police Department, where he served as a patrol officer, radio dispatcher, training instructor, investigator, and field commander over the years; and

WHEREAS, Henry Henson rose through the ranks and ultimately became chief of the Norfolk Police Department before retiring in 1993 after 39 years of service; and

WHEREAS, during his law-enforcement career, Henry Henson earned a bachelor's degree from Old Dominion University, attended the Federal Bureau of Investigation National Academy, and pursued other opportunities for professional development; and

WHEREAS, Henry Henson was a staunch advocate for his fellow law-enforcement officers and was active with two different civic leagues in Norfolk, building consensus on important issues facing local communities; he enjoyed fellowship and worship with the congregation of what is now Trinity Word of Faith Baptist Church, where he was chair of deacons; and

WHEREAS, predeceased by his wife of almost 50 years, Jane, and his sons, Steven and James, Henry Henson will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by his daughters, Marian and Susan, and their families and numerous other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That the House of Delegates hereby note with great sadness the loss of Henry P. Henson; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Henry P. Henson as an expression of the House of Delegates' respect for his memory.
