HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 868
Commending Edward L. Wright, Jr.
Agreed to by the House of Delegates, February 21, 2025
WHEREAS, Edward L. Wright, Jr., a veteran, educator, community leader, and loyal member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, has made numerous contributions to the Portsmouth community; and
WHEREAS, Edward Wright grew up in Norfolk, where he graduated from Booker T. Washington High School; he continued his education at the Norfolk Division of Virginia State University until he was drafted into the United States Army during the Korean War; and
WHEREAS, after his honorable discharge, Edward Wright earned a bachelor's degree from Virginia Union University and began a career as a history teacher at Hayden High School in Franklin; he was a champion for the promotion of history education throughout his career; and
WHEREAS, Edward Wright subsequently transferred to Portsmouth Public Schools, from which he retired in 1991; he also supervised student-teacher education at Norfolk State University until 1998; and
WHEREAS, Edward Wright was inducted into Portsmouth's Zeta Iota Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity in 1965, and he was well known as a top seller for scholarship and fundraising events for many years, going above and beyond to help make a difference in the lives of community members; and
WHEREAS, Edward Wright enjoys fellowship and worship with his community as a life member of Saint John's A.M.E. Church in Norfolk; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That Edward L. Wright, Jr., hereby be commended for his lifetime of service to his community, his country, and his Omega Psi Phi Fraternity; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Edward L. Wright, Jr., as an expression of the House of Delegates' admiration for his achievements.
