HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 837
Commending Witold Brick.
Agreed to by the House of Delegates, February 21, 2025
WHEREAS, Witold Brick, a member of the Polish resistance who battled the Nazis during World War II before settling in the United States, celebrates his 102nd birthday in 2025; and
WHEREAS, Witold “Victor” Brick was born in 1923 and witnessed the Nazi invasion of Poland in 1939; he endured oppressive conditions to pursue higher education after the closure of many universities by occupation forces; and
WHEREAS, braving the threat of torture and execution, Victor Brick joined the Home Army, the primary Polish resistance group during the war, and participated in the Warsaw Uprising in 1944; he was subsequently captured and endured harrowing conditions as a prisoner of war; and
WHEREAS, Victor Brick was liberated in May 1945 by advance forces of General George S. Patton's Seventh United States Army; and
WHEREAS, Victor Brick joined the Polish 2nd Corps of the Polish Armed Forces in the West and trained as an officer before transitioning from military service to academia; and
WHEREAS, Victor Brick was working at the Polish Academic Center in Turin, Italy, when his home country fell behind the Iron Curtain of the Soviet Union; a staunch opponent of communism, he lived in Great Britain for a time before emigrating to the United States; and
WHEREAS, Victor Brick proudly obtained United States citizenship on July 17, 1956; he has exemplified the highest virtues of courage, perseverance, and patriotism and embodied the indomitable spirit of those who fight for justice and freedom, leaving a lasting legacy that serves as an inspiration to all; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That Witold Brick hereby be commended on the occasion of his 102nd birthday; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Witold Brick as an expression of the House of Delegates' admiration for his resilience in the pursuit of freedom and democracy.
