HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 786
Celebrating the life of the Honorable Von LeRoy Piersall, Jr.
Agreed to by the House of Delegates, February 19, 2025
WHEREAS, the Honorable Von LeRoy Piersall, Jr., a former judge of the Portsmouth Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court and the Portsmouth Circuit Court, died on July 29, 2024; and
WHEREAS, Von Piersall was born in Marietta, Ohio, and relocated to Portsmouth with his family when he was four years old; and
WHEREAS, Von Piersall graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School, where he was voted the wittiest member of his senior class, then earned a bachelor's degree and a law degree from the University of Richmond; and
WHEREAS, Von Piersall was elected as the Commonwealth's Attorney for Portsmouth in 1966 and was the youngest Commonwealth's Attorney in Virginia history; and
WHEREAS, in 1970, Von Piersall was appointed as a judge of the Portsmouth Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court of the 3rd Judicial District of Virginia and presided over the court with great fairness and wisdom for the next 25 years; and
WHEREAS, Von Piersall was elevated to the Portsmouth Circuit Court of the 3rd Judicial Circuit of Virginia in 1995 and served in that capacity until his retirement in 2003; he continued to serve the court and the community as a substitute judge and a mediator for another 10 years; and
WHEREAS, Von Piersall was a 32nd degree mason and a member of the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, the Elks Lodge, and the Lions Club; he enjoyed fellowship and worship with the congregation of Green Acres Presbyterian Church, where he held several leadership roles; and
WHEREAS, Von Piersall will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by his beloved wife of 60 years, Judy; his children, Lynn and Trey, and their families; and numerous other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Delegates hereby note with great sadness the loss of the Honorable Von LeRoy Piersall, Jr., a respected jurist in Portsmouth; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of the Honorable Von LeRoy Piersall, Jr., as an expression of the House of Delegates' respect for his memory.
