HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 784
Celebrating the life of Luther Foster Brown, Jr.
Agreed to by the House of Delegates, February 19, 2025
WHEREAS, Luther Foster Brown, Jr., a civic-minded member of the community in Portsmouth, died on August 31, 2024; and
WHEREAS, Luther Brown grew up in the Douglas Park neighborhood and attended Portsmouth Public Schools; he began to cultivate his deep faith at a young age as a member of St. James Episcopal Church; and
WHEREAS, Luther Brown joined the United States Air Force in 1957 and served his country for several years; and
WHEREAS, Luther Brown traveled throughout the world during his time in the military, then settled back in Portsmouth and lived in the Brighton and Prentiss Park neighborhoods; and
WHEREAS, Luther Brown was a dedicated volunteer poll worker on election days and took pride in encouraging others to fulfill their civic duty to vote; and
WHEREAS, Luther Brown was passionate about college and professional football and a lifelong fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers; and
WHEREAS, Luther Brown brought joy to others through his wit, sense of humor, kindness, and commitment to service; and
WHEREAS, Luther Brown will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by his daughter, Chanta, and her family, and numerous other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Delegates hereby note with great sadness the loss of Luther Foster Brown, Jr., an active volunteer leader in Portsmouth; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Luther Foster Brown, Jr., as an expression of the House of Delegates' respect for his memory.
