HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 706

Commending Martin Leamy.

Agreed to by the House of Delegates, February 20, 2025

WHEREAS, Martin Leamy of Bedford County has worked diligently to honor and support the nation's veterans as president and chief executive officer of Central and Southwest Virginia Honor Flight; and

WHEREAS, Martin Leamy is a veteran of the United States Army and has long worked for the National D-Day Memorial Foundation; in 2017, he joined Central and Southwest Virginia Honor Flight, a chapter of the Honor Flight Network; and

WHEREAS, the Honor Flight Network, a national nonprofit organization, was established in 2005 to transport World War II veterans to Washington, D.C., to visit the National World War II Memorial and participate in other events to celebrate their military service; and

WHEREAS, since that time, the Honor Flight Network has expanded to serve veterans of the Korean War and the Vietnam War, escorting more than 295,000 individuals to the nation's capital; veterans may participate in the program free of charge and are accompanied by a volunteer guardian who provides assistance and companionship; and

WHEREAS, under Martin Leamy's leadership, Central and Southwest Virginia Honor Flight has conducted several weekend trips to Washington, D.C., typically in April and October, allowing veterans from the region to visit various monuments and memorials, along with Arlington National Cemetery; and

WHEREAS, to better serve local veterans, Martin Leamy has cultivated working relationships with local Daughters of the American Revolution chapters, Veterans of Foreign Wars posts, and American Legion posts, as well as businesses and other community partners; and

WHEREAS, Martin Leamy and Central and Southwest Virginia Honor Flight have given veterans the opportunity to reflect on their service, build fellowship, and celebrate their own roles in the nation's history; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That Martin Leamy hereby be commended for his years of service to veterans as president and chief executive officer of Central and Southwest Virginia Honor Flight; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Martin Leamy as an expression of the House of Delegates' admiration for his efforts to honor those who have served and sacrificed in defense of the nation.
