HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 653

Commending Wood Brothers Racing.



Agreed to by the House of Delegates, February 17, 2025

WHEREAS, Wood Brothers Racing, one of the most distinguished teams in the National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing (NASCAR), claimed its 100th NASCAR Cup Series victory with driver Harrison Burton's win in the Coke Zero Sugar 400 at the Daytona International Speedway on August 24, 2024; and

WHEREAS, Wood Brothers Racing traces its origins to Stuart, where the team was founded by Glen Wood, who raced periodically in the NASCAR circuit between 1950 and 1964, earning four victories, all at Bowman Gray Stadium in Winston-Salem, North Carolina; and

WHEREAS, Glen Wood built Wood Brothers Racing with the help of his brothers, Leonard, Delano, Clay, and Ray Lee, who worked on the cars, served as the pit crew, and contributed to the operation and growth of the team; and

WHEREAS, Leonard Wood served for many years as Wood Brothers Racing's crew chief and developed a number of innovations and pit stop techniques that revolutionized racing strategy, earning him recognition as one of the most influential figures in NASCAR history; and

WHEREAS, Glen Wood's sons Eddie and Len took over leadership of Wood Brothers Racing in the late 1980s and were later joined by their sister Kim; today, the third generation of the Wood family, including former NASCAR driver Jon Wood, Jordan Wood Hicks, and Keven Wood, builds on the family's legacy in motorsports; and

WHEREAS, the Wood family's dedication and traditions of excellence have made Wood Brothers Racing the oldest continuously operating NASCAR Cup Series team and one of its winningest outfits; and

WHEREAS, in 1998, as part of NASCAR's 50th anniversary commemoration, Glen Wood and 19 other former Wood Brothers Racing drivers were selected to be among NASCAR's 50 Greatest Drivers; and

WHEREAS, after 53 years of operating the business out of Glen and Bernece Wood's home in Stuart, Wood Brothers Racing moved its headquarters in 2003 to Charlotte, North Carolina, establishing the team in the capital of stock car racing; and

WHEREAS, prior to their 100th victory, Wood Brothers Racing secured its 98th win at the 2011 Daytona 500 with driver Trevor Bayne and its 99th win at the Pocono Raceway in 2017 with driver Ryan Blaney; and

WHEREAS, Wood Brothers Racing, the oldest active team in NASCAR and one of the winningest organizations in league history, will celebrate its diamond anniversary in 2025 as it enters its 75th season in competition; and

WHEREAS, the accomplishments of Wood Brothers Racing are the result of the commitment and determination of the team's leaders, drivers, and personnel, who serve as an inspiration to all Virginians; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That Wood Brothers Racing hereby be commended on the occasion of its 100th National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing Cup Series win; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Wood Brothers Racing as an expression of the House of Delegates' admiration for the team's achievements and best wishes for its continued success.
