HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 758
Commending Geraldine Maskelony.

WHEREAS, Geraldine Maskelony, a statistics and mathematics teacher with the Arlington Tech program of Arlington County Public Schools, received the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching, the nation's most prestigious honor for teachers of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, in January 2025; and
WHEREAS, Geraldine “Gerri” Maskelony holds a bachelor's degree in philosophy from the University of Virginia, a master's degree in statistics from George Mason University, and a master's degree in music from Anderson University; and
WHEREAS, Gerri Maskelony previously worked as a statistician and operations researcher before beginning her career as an educator in 2007, enabling her to bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to her lessons in statistics; and
WHEREAS, after teaching instrumental music at several public and private schools in the Commonwealth, Gerri Maskelony has been with the Arlington Career Center and the Arlington Tech program for several years; and
WHEREAS, in addition to teaching high school students in dual-enrolled statistics, quantitative analysis, and data science in a project-based early-college program, Gerri Maskelony also serves as the Arlington Career Center's STEM and project-based learning coordinator and as an adjunct statistics professor at Northern Virginia Community College; and
WHEREAS, Gerri Maskelony cultivates her students' comprehension of the material by creating project-based learning opportunities that allow them to use their knowledge of statistics to research questions or datasets they find engaging and to explore how statistics and data science may be applied in the real world; and
WHEREAS, Gerri Maskelony has advanced mathematics education at both the local and state level through her participation in various education conferences and webinars and has been the beneficiary of several professional development grants from entities such as the National Aeronautics and Space Administration and the National Endowment for the Humanities; and
WHEREAS, with integrity, compassion, and dedication to her students and fellow faculty members, Gerri Maskelony has embodied the ideals of the teaching profession, earning her the esteem and admiration of all Virginians; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Geraldine Maskelony for receiving the 2025 Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Geraldine Maskelony as an expression of the General Assembly's high regard for her contributions to education in the Commonwealth.
