HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 742

Commending the Plumbers and Gasfitters of Local Union 5.

WHEREAS, the Plumbers and Gasfitters of Local Union 5, the Washington, D.C., area local union of the United Association of Journeymen and Apprentices of the Plumbing and Pipefitting Industry of the United States and Canada, celebrates its 135th anniversary in 2025; and

WHEREAS, shortly after the establishment of what would become the United Association of Journeymen and Apprentices of the Plumbing and Pipefitting Industry of the United States and Canada, the Plumbers and Gasfitters of Local Union 5 was chartered in January 1890; and

WHEREAS, over its history, the Plumbers and Gasfitters of Local Union 5 have installed the plumbing systems at federal buildings, retail sites, military bases, hospitals, hotels, sporting venues, and other buildings throughout the National Capital region; and

WHEREAS, the Plumbers and Gasfitters of Local Union 5 is a growing organization that currently represents more than 1,600 members who work tirelessly each day to support the community's plumbing and water supply needs; and

WHEREAS, the Plumbers and Gasfitters of Local Union 5 helps its members achieve their full potential through a rigorous apprenticeship program and continuing education classes for experienced journeymen; and

WHEREAS, the Plumbers and Gasfitters of Local Union 5 carries out a number of charitable outreach activities, such as its “Heat's On, Water's Off” initiative, to support underserved individuals and families; and

WHEREAS, the Plumbers and Gasfitters of Local Union 5 actively advocates on behalf of workers and their families to improve their safety and quality of life; and

WHEREAS, through its dedication to its members and to the health and well-being of the community, the Plumbers and Gasfitters of Local Union 5 has made a profound and lasting impact on the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend the Plumbers and Gasfitters of Local Union 5 on the occasion of the organization's 135th anniversary; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the Plumbers and Gasfitters of Local Union 5 as an expression of the General Assembly's admiration for the organization's history and its contributions to the Commonwealth.
