HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 741

Celebrating the life of Augustine Joseph Matson.

WHEREAS, Augustine Joseph Matson, a beloved husband, father, and grandfather, and a respected member of the Alexandria community, died on December 9, 2024; and

WHEREAS, Augustine “Gus” Joseph Matson grew up in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where he graduated from Monsignor Bonner and Archbishop Prendergast High School; he studied at Mount Saint Mary College and earned a bachelor's degree in accounting from Saint Joseph's University; and

WHEREAS, Gus Matson began his career as a special agent with the Internal Revenue Service, then worked as a certified public accountant in private practice; after relocating to the Commonwealth in 1997, he changed careers and worked in computer programming; and

WHEREAS, Gus Matson was a devoted volunteer who fostered a sense of fellowship and inspired others to take a more active role in their communities wherever he went; he was an active leader in the Hollin Hills neighborhood of Alexandria, where he served as president of the pool committee and president and treasurer of the civic association; and

WHEREAS, Gus Matson will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by his wife of 37 years, Barbara Liggett; their daughter Carly, and her family; his children from a previous marriage, Christopher, David, Peter, Mary Kate, Kevin, and Susan, and their families; and numerous other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of Augustine Joseph Matson, a highly admired resident of Alexandria; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Augustine Joseph Matson as an expression of the General Assembly's respect for his memory.
