HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 691

Commending the McLean Community Center.

WHEREAS, for 50 years, the McLean Community Center has provided engaging experiences that enrich the lives of McLean residents of all ages, backgrounds, and interests; and

WHEREAS, the McLean Community Center was established by a group of local citizens, now known as the Friends of the McLean Community Center, who worked together for a decade to create a vibrant, multi-purpose community space; and

WHEREAS, in addition to identifying and acquiring the property where the McLean Community Center would be built, the group advocated for the center to be funded by a special real estate tax surcharge, which was approved by voters in 1970, and to be overseen by an elected governing board, rather than appointed board members; and

WHEREAS, since opening its doors in October 1975, the McLean Community Center has been a hub for arts, culture, and community connections, faithfully serving the residents of Dranesville Small District 1A; and

WHEREAS, the McLean Community Center provides a variety of educational and cultural activities; its facilities include the Alden Theatre, art galleries, studios, and spaces for community meetings and events, as well as the award-winning Old Firehouse Center, a dynamic space for teens and families; and

WHEREAS, the McLean Community Center hosts several beloved local events, including the annual McLean Day festival, ArtFest, antique and craft shows, dances, and more; and

WHEREAS, the McLean Community Center has fulfilled its mission through the outstanding leadership of its all-volunteer governing board, support from the Friends of the McLean Community Center, and the hard work of countless event and program volunteers; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend the McLean Community Center on the occasion of its 50th anniversary; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the McLean Community Center as an expression of the General Assembly's admiration for its legacy of contributions to the residents of McLean as a cherished local gathering place.
