HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 678

Commending the Roanoke Higher Education Center.

WHEREAS, the Roanoke Higher Education Authority, a political subdivision established in 1997 by the Commonwealth, is governed by a board of trustees; and

WHEREAS, the Roanoke Higher Education Center functions under the umbrella of the Roanoke Higher Education Authority, allowing access to educational opportunities that lead to degrees, certificates, endorsements, and workforce skill development to meet the diverse needs of the workforce; and

WHEREAS, the Roanoke Higher Education Center opened its doors in August 2000 and has contributed more than $10 million of economic growth annually to the Roanoke region with an additional $8 million in student spending; and

WHEREAS, the Roanoke Higher Education Center's main building and the Claude Moore Education Complex are historic treasures located in the heart of downtown Roanoke; and

WHEREAS, the Roanoke Higher Education Center takes pride in hosting James Madison University, Project Discovery, Radford University, Region 5 Adult Education, Sovah School of Health Professions, Total Action for Progress, Virginia Commonwealth University, Virginia State University, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, and Virginia Western Community College to deliver programs and services to the citizens of the Roanoke region; and

WHEREAS, the Roanoke Higher Education Center has awarded over 16,000 degrees, certificates, and endorsements during the past 25 years; and

WHEREAS, the Roanoke Higher Education Center administers approximately 3,000 tests annually through its Educational Testing Center designed to help individuals achieve workforce endorsements and credentials; and

WHEREAS, the Roanoke Higher Education Center provides computer labs, video conferencing, and a state-of-the-art meeting space to more than 18,000 individuals from community organizations annually; and

WHEREAS, the Roanoke Higher Education Center provides a range of clinical simulation exercises to more than 3,500 students each year who plan to enter health care jobs; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend the Roanoke Higher Education Center for its 25 years of service providing access to educational opportunities to the citizens of the Roanoke region; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the Roanoke Higher Education Center as an expression of the General Assembly's admiration for the center's contributions to the Roanoke region and the Commonwealth.
