HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 671
Celebrating the life of Irene Louise Schubert.

WHEREAS, Irene Louise Schubert, an esteemed librarian and beloved member of the Fairfax County community, died on November 17, 2024; and
WHEREAS, born in Escanaba, Michigan, Irene Schubert graduated from high school in Superior, Wisconsin, before earning a bachelor's degree from the University of Wisconsin–Stout and a master's degree in library science from the University of Denver; and
WHEREAS, Irene Schubert embarked upon her career as a librarian with an apprenticeship at the public library in Westminster, Colorado, and served as a reference librarian at the University of Wyoming and the University of Toledo before becoming the head of reference at the University of Maryland's undergraduate library; and
WHEREAS, Irene Schubert joined the Library of Congress in the early 1980s, first as a member of the Congressional Research Service, then as head of the newspaper and current periodical reading room, and ultimately as chief of the Preservation Reformatting Division before her retirement in 2002; and
WHEREAS, in her retirement, Irene Schubert saw the world, living for a year in Romania, crossing Britain along Hadrian's Wall, exploring Europe, and residing part-time in Gyor, Hungary, for 16 years; and
WHEREAS, Irene Schubert generously gave more than 2,000 hours of service, particularly in the library, as a volunteer at President George Washington's Mount Vernon estate; and
WHEREAS, Irene Schubert will be fondly remembered and dearly missed by her loving husband of 55 years, Frank; her sons, Max and Andrew; and numerous other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of Irene Louise Schubert, a cherished member of the Fairfax County community whose kindness and generosity touched countless lives; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Irene Louise Schubert as an expression of the General Assembly's respect for her memory.
