HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 626

Celebrating the life of Benjamin Pollard Alsop Warthen.

WHEREAS, Benjamin Pollard Alsop Warthen, an honorable veteran, esteemed attorney, and beloved member of the Richmond community, died on July 3, 2024; and

WHEREAS, Benjamin “Ben” Pollard Alsop Warthen graduated from Christchurch School, the University of Virginia, the London School of Economics, and the University of Virginia School of Law, and he was a proud and active member of the Phi Kappa Psi fraternity; and

WHEREAS, Ben Warthen served his country with honor and distinction as a member of the United States Army and began his professional career at the Morgan Guaranty Trust Company in New York City; and

WHEREAS, Ben Warthen returned to the Commonwealth to establish a private law practice and devoted himself to the prosperity and well-being of his clients; he was honored in June 2024 by the Virginia State Bar for achieving 50 years in the practice of law; and

WHEREAS, after serving as city councilman for the Third District in Richmond from 1992 to 1994, Ben Warthen embarked upon a new and meaningful venture as the founder, operator, and publisher of Richmond State News; and

WHEREAS, Ben Warthen supported the growth and development of the University of Virginia as a member of its board of visitors from 1998 to 2002, and he continued to act as a mentor to students of the university for years thereafter; and

WHEREAS, Ben Warthen gave generously of his time and talents for the benefit of his community, sitting on the board of the Poe Museum in Richmond and holding memberships with various distinguished social organizations; and

WHEREAS, beyond his career and community service, Ben Warthen found immense joy in maintaining his impressive collection of classic and antique cars as well as his mountain property in Albemarle County; and

WHEREAS, Ben Warthen will be fondly remembered and dearly missed by his loving wife of 45 years, Terry; his son, Thomas; and numerous other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of Benjamin Pollard Alsop Warthen, a revered member of the Richmond community whose kindness and generosity made an impact on countless lives; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Benjamin Pollard Alsop Warthen as an expression of the General Assembly's respect for his memory.
