HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 460
Commending Michele Moyer Lee.
Agreed to by the House of Delegates, January 20, 2025
WHEREAS, Michele Moyer Lee, an accomplished educator and coach, has made extraordinary contributions to the community of Winchester and demonstrated outstanding dedication to education, youth mentorship, and swimming; and
WHEREAS, Michele “Shelly” Moyer Lee began her lifelong passion for swimming at the young age of three, a journey that would ultimately lead her to a life of service and commitment to the Winchester community, where she has resided since 1973; and
WHEREAS, after competing on her local swim team in Wyomissing, Pennsylvania, and continuing her involvement with swimming through high school and college, Shelly Lee arrived in Winchester, where she began her career as a lifeguard at Jim Barnett Park after being hired by Denny Lee, who later became her husband and partner in serving the Winchester community; and
WHEREAS, Shelly Lee has made a profound impact as a teacher, coach, and mentor over more than 45 years, having supported the students and teachers at Daniel Morgan Middle School, Virginia Avenue Charlotte DeHart Elementary School, and John Handley High School, where she co-founded and coached the school's first swim team and coached the girls' cross-country and track teams; and
WHEREAS, Shelly Lee's dedication to youth sports is exemplified by her work in establishing girls' basketball and track and field teams, as well as the gymnastics club at Daniel Morgan Middle School, in addition to running summer girls' sports camps and the intramural program through Winchester Parks and Recreation; and
WHEREAS, beyond her involvement in Winchester's schools, Shelly Lee has remained an active figure in the local community, serving as an event coordinator for the 2 for 2 Foundation, which promotes water and ice sports programs throughout the Northern Shenandoah Valley, and working to ensure swim literacy and water safety through financial aid and swim lessons; and
WHEREAS, Shelly Lee has been an enthusiastic volunteer with the Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival, a dedicated member of the local Lions Club, a swim lesson instructor and board member with the Winchester Parks Foundation, and a swim meet judge and supporter of Handley High School's swim team; and
WHEREAS, Shelly Lee's passion for swimming and education is supported by her academic achievements, including a bachelor's degree in health and physical education from West Chester University and a master's degree in education with a specialty in sports medicine from the University of Virginia, which was made possible through the support of Winchester Public Schools; and
WHEREAS, Shelly Lee's outstanding contributions to the community have earned her recognition as the 2024 Woman of the Year by the Winchester Branch of the American Association of University Women, a testament to her leadership, mentorship, and community involvement; and
WHEREAS, Shelly Lee's positive attitude, enthusiasm, and dedication have inspired multiple generations of Winchester residents, and her deep love for the community has left a lasting legacy that continues to impact the youth and families of the region; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That Michele Moyer Lee hereby be commended for her decades of service to Winchester as a teacher, coach, and advocate for swimming and youth sports and for her unwavering dedication to the betterment of the community; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Michele Moyer Lee as an expression of the high esteem in which she is held by the members of the House of Delegates and the citizens of the Commonwealth.
