An Act to amend the Code of Virginia by adding in Article 1 of Chapter 16 of Title 19.2 a section numbered 19.2-271.7, relating to notifying defendant of consequences criminal proceedings can have on immigration.

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Virginia:

1. That the Code of Virginia is amended by adding in Article 1 of Chapter 16 of Title 19.2 a section numbered 19.2-271.7 as follows:

§ 19.2-271.7. Notifying defendant of consequences criminal proceedings can have on immigration.

Upon the defendant's first physical appearance for any misdemeanor or felony, the court shall advise the defendant of the following: The outcome of criminal proceedings may have federal immigration and naturalization consequences.
