Celebrating the life of Harold Alvin Goodman, Sr.

WHEREAS, Harold Alvin Goodman, Sr., a dedicated employee at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard, champion for equality and civil rights, and an active and beloved member of the Portsmouth community, died on January 24, 2025; and
WHEREAS, Harold Goodman devoted more than 33 years to the Norfolk Naval Shipyard as a boilermaker, playing a vital role in the facility's efforts to build, remodel, and repair the United States Navy's ships; and
WHEREAS, after he was unfairly denied a promotion to general foreman, Harold Goodman successfully challenged the decision, which helped to pave the way for others to receive equal treatment in their promotions and to achieve greater success in their careers; and
WHEREAS, Harold Goodman was highly involved in his community, both as a longtime member of the Martin Luther King Jr. Steering Committee and as an enthusiastic advocate for civic engagement; and
WHEREAS, in addition to encouraging others to embrace their civic duty by volunteering with various political campaigns, Harold Goodman was instrumental to the integration of a golf course in Portsmouth; and
WHEREAS, Harold Goodman will be fondly remembered and dearly missed by his wife; his children and their families; and numerous other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Delegates hereby note with great sadness the loss of Harold Alvin Goodman, Sr., a treasured member of the Portsmouth community who made an impact on countless lives; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Harold Alvin Goodman, Sr., as an expression of the House of Delegates' respect for his memory.
