Celebrating the life of Morton G. Thalhimer, Jr.

WHEREAS, Morton G. Thalhimer, Jr., an honorable veteran, accomplished business executive, devoted philanthropist, and beloved member of the Richmond community, died on September 6, 2024; and

WHEREAS, Morton Thalhimer attended St. Christopher's School in Richmond and later earned a bachelor's degree from Dartmouth College; and

WHEREAS, Morton Thalhimer served his country with honor and distinction as a member of the United States Navy from 1943 to 1946, obtaining his wings and becoming qualified in the F4U Corsair on the USS Guadalcanal aircraft carrier on July 27, 1945; and

WHEREAS, Morton Thalhimer was elected to serve as vice president of Neighborhood Theatre, Inc., a successful mid-Atlantic movie theater chain started by his father, in 1952 and became president in 1967, ably guiding the company in that role until it was sold nearly two decades later; and

WHEREAS, Morton Thalhimer became chairman of the real estate firm Georgetown Enterprises, Inc., in 1986 and cultivated its growth and success for the remainder of his life; and

WHEREAS, Morton Thalhimer gave generously of his time through his association with various civil and philanthropic organizations, including what are today the Weinstein Jewish Community Center, the Jewish Community Federation of Richmond, United Way, National Conference for Community and Justice, the Sheltering Arms Institute, where he served as president from 1965 to 1967, and the Rotary Club of Richmond, where he had 25 years of perfect attendance; and

WHEREAS, as a result of his work with the Greater Richmond Chapter of the American Red Cross, Morton Thalhimer was presented the Clara Barton Award, the organization's highest honor, by Elizabeth Dole in 1998; and

WHEREAS, in recognition of his efforts as a member of the Richmond Israel Bond Council, Morton Thalhimer received one of Israel's highest civil honors from the nation's prime minister; and

WHEREAS, Morton Thalhimer was an avid outdoorsman who embraced every opportunity to ski, duck hunt, swim, golf, and play tennis; and

WHEREAS, preceded in death by his wife, Nancy, Morton Thalhimer will be fondly remembered and dearly missed by his children, Morton III, Richard, and Leigh, and their families and by numerous other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of Morton G. Thalhimer, Jr., a cherished member of the Richmond community whose generosity and service made a difference in countless lives; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Morton G. Thalhimer, Jr., as an expression of the General Assembly's respect for his memory.
