Celebrating the life of Sergeant Floyd Hugo Miles, Jr.

WHEREAS, Sergeant Floyd Hugo Miles, Jr., a member of the Charles City County Sheriff's Office who was deeply dedicated to serving and supporting members of the public, died in the line of duty on June 9, 2024; and
WHEREAS, Floyd Miles was a graduate of Charles City High School, where he played on the football team and was a member of the Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps program; and
WHEREAS, after high school graduation, Floyd Miles enlisted in the United States Army and served the nation as a military police officer, then returned home to the Commonwealth and joined the Charles City County Sheriff's Office; and
WHEREAS, over the course of his 16-year career with the Charles City County Sheriff's Office, Floyd Miles worked as a DARE instructor, general instructor, Project Lifesaver coordinator, and school resource officer; he was a longtime member of the Peninsula Alcohol Safety Action Program and received several awards from Mothers Against Drunk Driving for his intervention and enforcement efforts; and
WHEREAS, Floyd Miles had recently graduated from animal control officer training and was serving as the supervisor of the Charles City County Sheriff's Office's animal control unit; and
WHEREAS, in June 2024, Floyd Miles suffered a medical emergency while attempting to assist a member of the public in distress; and
WHEREAS, Floyd Miles served the residents of Charles City County and the Commonwealth with the utmost dedication and distinction, and his loss is a tragedy for the community he proudly served; and
WHEREAS, Floyd Miles' son, Steven, who graduated from the 103rd Basic Law Enforcement Class at Crater Criminal Justice Training Academy in December, is currently employed with the Charles City County Sheriff's Office and will carry on his father's legacy; and
WHEREAS, Floyd Miles will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by his beloved wife, Denise; his children, Steven, Rashad, and Taequan, and their families; his parents, Floyd, Sr., and Clem; his siblings, Sean, Jonathan, Michael, and Sara, and their families; and numerous other family members, friends, and fellow law-enforcement officers; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of Sergeant Floyd Hugo Miles, Jr., a distinguished member of the Charles City County Sheriff's Office; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Sergeant Floyd Hugo Miles, Jr., as an expression of the General Assembly's respect for his memory.
