Commending the Yorktown Arts Foundation.

WHEREAS, for 50 years, the Yorktown Arts Foundation has fostered an appreciation for the arts in York County by promoting arts education and participation, as well as hosting venues for art sales by local artists; and

WHEREAS, the Yorktown Arts Foundation traces its roots to the formation of the Arts Committee of the York County Bicentennial Committee and was officially established as an independent organization in November 1975; and

WHEREAS, the Yorktown Arts Foundation originally opened the Yorktown Creative Arts Center on Church Street, then relocated to a house donated by Colonial National Historic Park; and

WHEREAS, the Yorktown Arts Foundation subsequently operated the On the Hill Cultural Arts Center at the corner of Ballard Street and Alexander Hamilton Boulevard from 1981 to 2003, then opened Gallery on the York on George Washington Memorial Highway; and

WHEREAS, from 2014 to 2024, the Yorktown Arts Foundation operated the On the Hill Gallery from the historic Burcher Cottage on Main Street in Yorktown, and as the premier gallery for regional artists to display and sell their works, it served thousands of visitors over the years; and

WHEREAS, On the Hill Gallery also hosted art competitions, juried exhibitions, and events featuring works by local art teachers and public school students; and

WHEREAS, while the On the Hill Gallery is closed as of summer 2024, the Yorktown Arts Foundation is continuing to support the local arts community with classes, a veterans art show, and other community outreach efforts; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend the Yorktown Arts Foundation for its contributions to cultural life in York County on the occasion of its 50th anniversary; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the Yorktown Arts Foundation as an expression of the General Assembly's admiration for the organization's contributions to the visual arts community in the region.
