Celebrating the life of Kathy Nerangis.

WHEREAS, Kathy Nerangis, a business owner, a passionate volunteer, and a champion for the residents of Winchester and communities across the Northern Shenandoah Valley, died on November 15, 2024; and

WHEREAS, Kathy Nerangis was a beacon of leadership, compassion, and service whose impact will be felt for generations through her dedication to family, business, and community; and

WHEREAS, Kathy Nerangis and her husband, Nick, co-founded Nerangis Enterprises, now Nerangis Management Corporation, in 1978 and grew the organization into a cornerstone of the region's economy, managing several McDonald's franchises, the Kernstown Commons shopping center, and other significant businesses; and

WHEREAS, Kathy Nerangis was a visionary leader and trailblazer who guided her restaurants to become smoke-free in 1993, years before state legislation, setting a standard for health and public safety; and

WHEREAS, Kathy Nerangis' commitment to the community extended beyond business; she founded First Night Winchester, a beloved New Year's Eve celebration that enriched local life for more than three decades, and played an instrumental role in bringing a Ronald McDonald House to Richmond; and

WHEREAS, Kathy Nerangis' philanthropic endeavors were vast and impactful, including her leadership on the boards of Winchester Medical Center, the Evans Home for Children, Shalom et Benedictus, and Laurel Ridge Community College, where she and her husband created the Martha and James Nerangis Memorial Endowed Scholarship for single parents; and

WHEREAS, Kathy and Nick Nerangis were recognized as honorary grand marshals of the Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival in 2023, a testament to their decades of dedication to the festival and the community it represents; and

WHEREAS, Kathy Nerangis was a person of immense kindness, vision, and generosity, who uplifted everyone she encountered, inspiring them with her warmth, wisdom, and tireless efforts to improve the lives of others; and

WHEREAS, Kathy Nerangis will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by her husband of 61 years, Nick; her children, Lisa, Nick, Jr., and Stephen, and their families; and numerous other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That the House of Delegates hereby note with great sadness the loss of Kathy Nerangis, a pillar of the community in Winchester and the Northern Shenandoah Valley who had a profound impact on countless lives; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Kathy Nerangis as an expression of the House of Delegates' respect for her memory.
