Celebrating the life of Michael David Killian.

WHEREAS, Michael David Killian of Spotsylvania County, a retired science educator who inspired others through his passion for the natural world, died on May 22, 2024; and

WHEREAS, Michael “Mike” David Killian grew up in Lincolnton, North Carolina, where he graduated from West Lincoln High School; he continued his education at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, then served his country as a member of the United States Army from 1972 to 1974; and

WHEREAS, Mike Killian subsequently completed a bachelor's degree in horticultural science at North Carolina State University, from which he also earned a master's degree in entomology; and

WHEREAS, Mike Killian worked in the agricultural field for the North Carolina Extension while completing his education, then taught biology and chemistry at Courtland High School in Spotsylvania County; and

WHEREAS, Mike Killian finished his career as a senior lecturer in the Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Mary Washington; and

WHEREAS, Mike Killian relished every opportunity to further his knowledge of botany and enjoyed fishing or spending time near any river, stream, swamp, or marsh; he also traveled extensively with his beloved wife, Joella; and

WHEREAS, Mike Killian developed a keen appreciation for musical theatre and regularly attended productions at the University of Mary Washington and the Riverside Center for the Performing Arts; and

WHEREAS, Mike Killian was an active member of the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Fredericksburg and the Fredericksburg Secular Humanists; and

WHEREAS, Mike Killian will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by his wife of 43 years, Joella, and numerous other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That the House of Delegates hereby note with great sadness the loss of Michael David Killian, a highly admired former educator in Spotsylvania County; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Michael David Killian as an expression of the House of Delegates' respect for his memory.
